Herbs of the Southern Appalachians
May 19 @ 9:00 am - May 20 @ 5:00 pm$150.00 - $200.00
Do you wish you knew more about the herbs of the Southern Appalachians? Learn to identify and use local plants as we explore the forests around the Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center in the mountains of northeast Georgia. The timing of this weekend gives us a chance to see both spring ephemerals and common wildflowers of late spring and early summer in a woodland setting.
We’ll devote a full day to learning how to identify wild plants using botanical keys and your senses. Our classroom is an outdoor area known for diverse plant habitats where many native medicinal herbs are found in abundance along with some rare specimens.
Later, we’ll settle down in the shade at Foxfire to learn more about the plants we’ve seen. You’ll learn:
- when and how to gather herbs in an ethical way
- tips for growing herbs in your own garden or yard
- recipes for making herbal preparations
- guidelines for using herbs to treat specific health conditions
Newcomers to herbal medicine are welcome. No previous experience needed. Student should bring their own copy of Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide by Laurence Newcomb. A list of other things needed for the class will be sent with your registration confirmation.
