Small Scale Organic Medicinal Herb Farming Workshop
June 1 @ 1:00 pm - June 3 @ 1:00 pm
Registration is closed for this workshop. Please send us an email if you’d like to be put on our waiting list should we have cancelations (include your phone number), or if you’d like to be notified when we schedule this workshop again (probably in the fall).
Have you ever dreamed of having an herb farm? This three-day workshop introduces you to the entire process of growing herbs from seed propagation to the packaging of herbs for sale. The workshop provides a concise introduction to the world of herbal medicines, including suggestions for possible markets for your herbs. We guarantee that you’ll leave this weekend with lots of practical information and a healthy dose of inspiration!
Gentle Harmony Farm, a certified organic herb farm in Lexington, NC, is the setting. Owners, Charles and Pam Leonard, will guide you through what they’ve learned about herb farm management from seed starting, transplanting, weeding to harvesting. They will demonstrate their methods for drying, garbling, chopping and packaging herbs for sale. You will also hear an overview of organic certification requirements and record keeping.
In the heat of the afternoon, we’ll retreat into the air conditioned barn where Jeannie Dunn, owner of Red Moon Herbs, will share her perspective on what buyers want and need from growers and harvesters. She will show you how to make herbal vinegars and, if time allows, take us on a walk to learn about the wild herbs that are also found around the farm.
You’ll also hear from Patricia Kyritsi Howell, a clinical herbalist and director of BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies. Patricia will demystify the language of herbal medicine and explain the various ways herbs and herbal products are used as medicines. She’ll also demonstrate how to make several common herbal preparations using both fresh and dried plant material.
Throughout the weekend there will be lots of time to ask questions and get the information you need to start (or expand) your own herb venture.
Workshop tuition includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Lodging is not included. See below for recommendations for nearby lodging and camping
