This week-long retreat immerses participants in the world of medicinal and edible plants of the Southern Appalachians, a region sometimes referred to as the “Apothecary of North America.” Together, we’ll explore the incredible diversity of native, introduced, and cultivated herbs that thrive here and how to use them as food and medicine.
Patricia Kyritsi Howell and Cara-Lee Langston lead retreat activities, including field studies, lectures, wildcrafting, foraging, medicine making, and more.
Arrive Sunday in time for an evening orientation and wild foods tea reception at the Parker Ranch. On Monday morning, we’ll head out to a local trail to begin botanizing. Each day starts with a field trip, where you’ll learn to use a botanical key to identify early summer herbs, practice sustainable harvesting, and gather herbs to make medicines. In the afternoons, we’ll discuss the uses of the plants we’ve seen, make medicines, and more.
