Description
In late spring, the Southern Appalachians are in transition. The weather warms, spring ephemerals fade, and a new display of wildflowers awaits us.
The fragrance of wild rose and honeysuckle intoxicates while the elusive pink lady slipper and spectacular flame azalea bloom deep in the shade of the forest floor.
A sharp eye finds many clues about what we will discover later in the summer and fall. Wild blackberry bushes, now covered in delicate flowers, will yield a bumper crop of delicious blackberries before long. And traces of last year’s chicken-of-the-woods mushrooms tell us where we hope to harvest this delightful wild food in the fall.
